Radon measurements

 

Radon is an odorless, colourless and tasteless natural radioactive gas. Exposure to indoor radon is the second main risk factor of lung cancer development after smoking (World Health Organization, 1988) and this gas is included in the Group 1 agents defined by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as carcinogenic to humans.

GeoExplorer S.r.l. evaluates radon exposition in workplaces and housings through time-integrated measurements in order to provide a mean value of radon concentration, which can be adopted to estimate damage to human health according to the guidelines of the Legislative Decree n. 241/00 and to the Commission Recommendation 143/90/Euratom.

Our main services include:

  • real-time measurements with hourly resolution of the indoor and/or outdoor radon concentration (in Bq/m3) performed by means of ionization chamber detectors or ZnS(Ag) scintillators (Lucas cell);
  • measurements of the mean daily concentration of indoor and/or outdoor radon (in Bq/m3) performed by means of silicon semiconductor detectors;
  • measurements of the mean concentration of indoor and/or outdoor radon (in Bq/m3) over long acquisition times (days/months) performed by means of passive detectors (nuclear tracks or electret);
  • measurements of radon concentration in water (in Bq/l) performed by means of ionization chamber detectors;
  • measurements of radon exhalation from the soil (in Bq/min) performed by means of probes and ionization chamber detectors;
  • measurements of radon exhalation from building materials (in Bq/min) performed in sealed boxes by means of ionization chamber detectors or silicon semiconductor detectors.
